What We're Doing Now

Building shared record-clearance infrastructure

With support from the California Access to Justice Commission, we've built the Clean Slate Engine. CSE is a secure end-to-end application that uses computational law principles to extract data from California criminal records, analyze remedies, and generate county-specific petition packets for attorney review.

Expanding the capacity of legal organizations

Legal aid organizations, public defenders, and reentry programs use the Clean Slate Engine in their own workflows, giving their staff and volunteers the infrastructure to handle more record-clearance cases efficiently.

Making clean slate resources accessible

Through our Clean Slate Hub, TAP provides free, practical resources for navigating record clearance. The Hub includes an interactive California county map with filing procedures and court requirements, a clean slate FAQ, declaration guidance and examples, and step-by-step instructions for obtaining a CA RAP sheet. These resources help individuals understand the process and give practitioners accessible guidance for preparing and filing petitions across the state.

Our Mission

The Access Project was founded in 2019 to improve access to high-quality legal services to people of limited means. Through creative use of technology and innovative program design, we leverage the resources and enthusiasm of law firm volunteers to complement and support the work of legal services organizations.
